Kris Gutiérrez Appointed to Administration Post by President Obama
Professor Kris Gutiérrez has been nominated to a key administration post on the National Board for Education Sciences by President Barack Obama. Gutiérrez is professor of literacy and learning sciences in the School of Education, and the Inaugural Provost’s Chair at CU-Boulder. She is a national leader in education and urban education, and recently served on President Obama’s Education Policy Transition Team. She was elected to the 2010 National Academy of Education and is the current president of the American Educational Research Association.
Professor Emeritus Richard Devin Receives Prestigious USITT Membership
Theatre & Dance Professor Emeritus Richard Devin has been awarded the prestigious Honorary Lifetime Member Award by the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT). Devin became the 11th recipient of this rarefied USITT membership, first given to Samuel Scripps. The award is presented for a lifetime of continuous service to the institute and confirms both continuous and distinguished service as well as conferring a lifetime membership on the recipient. Devin is also the former Colorado Shakespeare Festival producing artistic director.
CU Pain Research Gets Royal Nod from Spain
Linda R. Watkins, distinguished professor of psychology and neuroscience at CU-Boulder, has won Spain’s Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research. The award recognizes Watkins’ groundbreaking work in understanding the mechanisms and potential control of pain. Watkins is a President’s Teaching Scholar and directs the Interdepartmental Neuroscience doctoral program. For more information see the article in Arts & Sciences Magazine.
CU-Boulder Parking & Transportation Services Captures Top Award
CU-Boulder Parking & Transportation Services was named winner of the Award of Excellence International Parking Institute 2010 competition in the category of innovation in a parking operation or program. Each year, the competition recognizes world-class examples of parking design and program innovation. Winners reflect industry trends toward sustainability through LEED-certified structures, energy-efficient lighting, use of solar panels, new technologies and innovative approaches to parking.
Thomas Cech Receives Honorary Degree from Harvard
Thomas Cech received an honorary degree from Harvard University and delivered the commencement address at Harvard’s spring 2010 ceremony. Cech is the director of the Colorado Initiative in Molecular Biotechnology (CIMB), and a Distinguished Professor of chemistry and biochemistry.
