Academic Center Boosts Athletes' Classroom Performance
The Herbst Academic Center for Student-Athletes recently held its fifth annual open house to showcase its services to coaches, students, parents, academic advisors and others in the campus community.

Boulder Community Explores Nighttime Skies Together
One Saturday night each month the Sommers-Bausch Observatory opens its doors to a new group of space enthusiasts, the Boulder Astronomy and Space Society (BASS). BASS is comprised of experts and amateurs alike and includes CU faculty and staff members, college students, families with young children, teenagers and others in the Boulder community.

Theatre and Dance Offers a Variety of Entertainment
CU-Boulder's theatre and dance department is a small department that boasts large amounts of talent and creativity among its faculty, staff and students. Each year the department produces 12 fully realized theatre and dance productions and at least four workshop productions in the Acting Studio.

		CU Satellite Mission Team Members Receive Prestigious NASA Awards Team members for NASA's Solar Radiation and Climate Experiment, or SORCE, satellite that was designed, built and currently is controlled by the University of Colorado at Boulder have received two major awards from the agency.
		NSF Grants $3.25 Million To CU-Based National Center For Women and Information Technology In an age of increasing gender equity in many areas, women still represent only 25 percent of all information technology professionals. With the help of a $3.25 million grant from the National Science Foundation, the University of Colorado at Boulder is leading the mobilization of the National Center for Women & Information Technology.
		CU-Boulder Researchers Bring Geology To Life Applying 3-D Animation Used In Hollywood Feature Films Using software that created special effects in movies like "Star Wars: Phantom Menace" and "The Lord of The Rings," a team of CU-Boulder geologists is pioneering the creation of interactive geologic displays and three-dimensional animated movies for museums and national parks.

Learning from a Life in Medicine
Many of you may know that I am a practicing physician, specializing in internal and preventative medicine.  I am often asked how my experience as a physician influences my role as chancellor.  Actually, I have found that medicine is a very helpful background for my job as chancellor. 


AWARDS AND KUDOS


Tom Yulsman Nominated for 2004 Colorado Book Award
Associate Professor Tom Yulsman of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and two former Scripps fellows are finalists in the 2004 Colorado Book Awards. Yulsman's book, Origins: The Quest For Our Cosmic Roots, is nominated in the Nonfiction category. Yulsman is co-director of the Center for Environmental Journalism, which administers annual grants for the Ted Scripps Fellowship program.

Dan Glick is a 2000-01 fellow. His book, Monkey Dancing: A Father, Two Kids and a Journey to the Ends of the Earth, is nominated in the category of History/Biography. David Baron is a 1998-99 fellow. His book, The Beast in the Garden: A Modern Parable of Man and Nature, is nominated in the category of Colorado and the West.

The Colorado Book Awards will be announced Nov 18.


Disability Services Celebrates 30 Years
Disability Services celebrated their 30th Anniversary on October 22 in the UMC with stories and memories from students, staff and faculty. Disability Services provides students with disabilities the tools, reasonable accommodations and support services to participate fully in the academic environment. Their mission is to promote an accessible and culturally sensitive campus through outreach and by building partnerships within the university community and beyond. Women's Resource Center Hosts 10th Anniversary Commemoration
The Women's Resource Center celebrated their 10-year anniversary with an open house on Friday, October 22. The Center advocates for people of all genders, backgrounds, races, sexual orientations and abilities. Celebrating diversity and building and strengthening alliances across differences and between agencies is their goal. Colorado Combined Campaign Kicks Off the 2004 Season
The 2004 Colorado Combined Campaign started on Wednesday, Oct. 20. This year's theme is "In Unity is Strength." The CCC set a goal of $135,000 dollars this year, but the real focus is on increasing participation. The campaign actively continues through November. The tradition of drawing a name out of the donor box once a week for prizes will continue throughout the 2004 campaign.

Inside CU will be published once during the months of November, December and January. We will resume our regular schedule of two issues per month in February 2005.
